Who We Are

The Northern Consortium was established in 1992 with the mission to improve the physical and mental health of women and children. All obstetrical (including Ambulatory Care Facilities which provide family planning, prenatal, postpartum, gynecological and/or pediatric services) in the State of New Jersey are required by New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) regulations to belong to one of the six currently licensed regional Consortia. The State requires Consortia to become legally incorporated agencies and to secure non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service.

The Northern Consortium is an independent 501 (c) (3) non-profit health planning agency licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) to be the hub of regional obstetric and pediatric health care services for women and children in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties. Focused on the underserved communities, the Northern Consortium has been a leader in promoting cultural competency and the elimination of racial/ethnic disparities in health and education.

The Northern Consortium’s region includes the births of over 23,000 infants each year, accounting for approximately 20% of the births in the State. Our agency has the potential to improve service delivery by connecting disparate, often competing providers and linking them with the community and users of service to identify problems and implement solutions. The Northern Consortium’s activities are facilitated by collaboration and continually measured for effectiveness.
