Donating to the Northern Consortium will allow us to continue offering the programs and services featured on this website. While many of these programs are grant funded, economic changes have meant that many governmental agencies and private foundations have reduced the size of grants. In addition, the same economic changes have increased the pressure on women, children and families so that need has increased.
As you can see from the article recently published in the Bergen Record, it is clear that to continue these activities we need the help of contributors like you. Without additional support, programs such as the Northern Consortium’s lead poisoning prevention efforts will end. Achievements like this will not be possible:
A growing family in Alpine, NJ hired a contractor to expand their home in preparation for the arrival of their second child. While the renovations were taking place, their toddler was found to have an unsafe blood lead level. Their pediatrician indicated that their child was at risk for problems with his learning and development.
Fortunately, that week the Northern Consortium held an informational session at their child’s preschool. There they learned that lead-based paint was used until 1978 and that home renovation can release toxic dust and debris. The Northern Consortium was able to provide specific suggestions to help reduce the risk to the toddler, pregnant mother, and her new baby. In addition, the Northern Consortium supported the family to find a qualified contractor to perform safe lead abatement. Six months later, additional tests showed toddler, mother and baby were healthy and their home was a safe environment for their growing family.
We are appealing to you to support the services of the Northern Consortium. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.
