About the Consortium
In New Jersey, Department of Health & Senior Services’ regulations require that all healthcare providers who deliver infants be members of Maternal Child Health Consortia. These Consortia are licensed by the NJ Department of Health & Senior Services and provide public health planning, professional and consumer education, data analysis, and healthcare quality improvement. In addition, the Consortia are vehicles to implement the programs funded by federal Title V Block Grant funds that are awarded to the State of New Jersey.
The Northern Consortium was founded as an independent non-profit corporation in 1992 to provide services to a region which included Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Passaic Counties. Because this region includes areas with a broad range of income, socioeconomics, and population density, the Northern Consortium began to seek additional funding to support programs that would further its mission of improving the health of women, children, and families.
In 1995, the Northern Consortium was awarded its first competitive grant funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support training women to provide doula services in Paterson, NJ. Since that time, the Northern Consortium has raised more than $39 million in external funding to support programs furthering its mission to improve the health of women, children, and families.
