Nuestra Salud program featured at the NJALL Annual Conference

The Northern Consortium’s Nuestra Salud program staff were invited to participate in a panel presentation at the New Jersey Association for Lifelong Learning (NJALL) Conference: Adult Education and Immigrant Integration: New Challenges, New Solutions.

Liliana Pinete, Vice President for Program Development and Evaluation, and Carolina Lozada, Health Literacy Coordinator, will be presenting the successful implementation of the Nuestra Salud program in the workshop titled “Innovations in Health Literacy Education for Immigrants”. The workshop panel will include two additional health literacy programs, the Bergen County Community Partnership, and the Ironbound Community Corporation in Newark. The three innovative health literacy programs are supported with funding from the NJ Health Initiatives of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The Nuestra Salud program is a health literacy education program for new immigrants. In partnership with the Hispanic Institute for Research and Development (HIRD), the Nuestra Salud program has incorporated the “Expecting the Best” health literacy curriculum into English as a Second Language (ESL) courses offered at three locations: Bergen Community College, Raritan Valley Community College, and Camden Community College. The program provides learners with practical examples that are likely to occur as they encounter the NJ healthcare system by incorporating five hours of health literacy content into each 40-hour ESL course.

NJALL is a professional association that encourages the growth and development of lifelong learning and lifelong learners in the State of New Jersey.
