Irvington Family Development Center…A Family Success Center
The goal of the IFDC is to strengthen and empower families who live in and around Irvington to reach the goals they have set for themselves. It is a friendly neighborhood gathering place where families can go to receive different types of services for themselves and the people they care about. It is a safe and fun place where anyone can go for family support, job readiness, workshops, and other general support services. The IFDC helps to strengthen lives by empowering all families to succeed.
Created by the Northern Consortium in 1998 in partnership with the Healthy Mothers/ Healthy Babies of Essex, the Irvington Family Development Center began out of a local Irvington church basement. Over the last twelve years, the Center has continued to grow within the community as the needs of its population have changed. It began with a focus on Prenatal and Health Information, Literacy, Parenting Education, and Quality Childcare and has expanded to include Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, Fatherhood, Early Childhood Mental Health, and Economic Self-Sufficiency as a multi-dimensional Family Success Center operating out of a busy corporate office building in the heart of Irvington.
The Irvington Family Development Center (IFDC) is now open to anyone living in and around Irvington regardless of gender, age, income, insurance status, and citizenship status. IFDC provides FREE services to the one of the most underserved populations in the Essex County area. Our collaborators include the Mayor of Irvington, the Irvington Public Library, Irvington Public Schools, local food banks and pantries, and local community-based organizations. Most recently, we have reached out to new agencies throughout both urban and suburban Essex County via our Fatherhood Program. Irvington residents are connected to a continuum of critical resources through the work of IFDC.
IFDC is the only Family Success Center in Irvington and the only center operated by a Maternal/Child Health Consortium. The Center incorporates participants into its decision-making process and is operated by staff members with multiple Masters degrees. IFDC’s location is convenient to the community it serves. The Center has nearby bus stations, shopping and residential areas and a well-lit wheelchair accessible building with a free attached parking lot and flexible office hours.
